Caveat emptor: Lots of baby talk ahead. That's talk about the baby, not like a baby. And it's a long one. You've been warned.
So our sweet, darling Ellison just had her first birthday. I posted a picture recently of our family this Christmas, which of course makes me remember last Christmas.

What a difference a year makes, right? Now I loved Elle from her very first breath, so please keep that in mind while you read the next few lines. In many ways, I was a very hesitant mommy those first few months. The three of us have had so many precious moments together, but it was tough, too. Nick and I have had real arguments for the first time in our marriage, and some of the compromises are still a work in progress. Except for the few days I've been away from home, I haven't slept in for over a year, and that used to be one of my favorite little luxuries. I used to spend Saturday afternoons doing whatever I wanted - shopping, scrapbooking, whatever - but now I have to cram whatever I can into 1-2 hours during nap. And when you compound all the usual mommy worries with a medical school education, you have a recipe for driving yourself insane, imagining all the awful possibilities that could happen to your child if she touches, breathes, or ingests too much of the wrong things or too little of the right things.
But you know the crazy thing? Somewhere along the way, probably 4 months in, I stopped minding those things. Some people call it hormones, but I really think it's just God's grace to mommies to keep the species going. He had the good sense to make babies smile around 2 months so you won't throw them in the trash. And then when she started giving hugs a few months ago... Well, if that doesn't warm you're heart, you might be a robot. And the way she lights up when I walk into her daycare room, bouncing and giggling; she loves me back! When people ask me what surprised me most about becoming a parent, I tell them I can't believe how much I love her. So for any of you ladies worried about having kids because you're afraid you won't like them or won't know what to do with them, take it from this cold-hearted non-baby person. If I can do it, you can do it. And it really is different when it's your own kid. Really.
Two points in follow-up:
1) Don't go thinking I'm gonna quit my day job and become a pre-school teacher. Just because I'm good with my kid doesn't mean I'm good with kids in general. I still have no idea what to do with someone else's baby. I'm still me; I just have a soft spot for one particular baby.
2) This post would not be complete without a shout-out to my dear sweet hubby. He has been really patient with my doctor-mommy freaking out self, and it puts my heart at peace to watch my favorite husband and my favorite baby playing and laughing together. God put together quite a pair with us, didn't he?
OK, sappy reflection time over. We'll be back to our regular scheduled programming later this week.
