Last Saturday was Nick Appreciation Day. For you to, well, appreciate it, let me start with the backstory. I think I may have mentioned once or twice how much I love my husband. He's just the best. I think I may also have mentioned how tough intern year was for me. One day during that bleak November, Nick announced "Beth Appreciation Day." I don't remember exactly what we did, but I'm pretty sure it involved shopping, him cooking me dinner, him rubbing my feet, and us watching a movie of my choosing (probably 13 Going on 30). In all seriousness, the fact that he made such an effort to make me feel special when work was beating me down so, so badly really did lift my spirits immensely. And because, as Nick likes to say, our marriage is a competition, I couldn't let him be the only one making sacrifices for the other's happiness. Hence was borne the tradition of Nick vs. Beth Appreciation Days.
We started with lunch at Pei Wei, where we shared Nick's favorites, chicken lettuce wraps and sweet and sour chicken. Then we walked around the mall to kill some time before our movie started. This is where Nick let me sneak some Beth activity; I got a pretty ribbon-embellished blue cardigan from Banana Republic. And Nick got a couple T-shirts, too. (Yes, I do take responsibility for his addiction to BR cotton.)
Then we saw the much anticipated Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. For those of you like me who don't follow the gaming and/or comic industry closely or even at all, let me give some more backstory. This movie is apparently based on a comic book. It has gotten great reviews but overall flopped at the box office because it lacks a target audience; there just aren't enough comic and gaming nerds to compete with the teenage girl buying power backing Zac Effron. But that is neither here nor there. Nick was excited to see this movie. For me, it was... interesting. Very different, very visually engaging with the comic-book style overlays (Wam, Pow, floating hearts, etc) and the Matrix-meets-Nintendo fight scenes. But the novelty wore off to me about halfway through. Nick liked it quite a bit, though. So if you're a closet gamer and/or comic junkie, go eat your heart out.
So there you have it. Three cheers for Nick, and a halfway-enthusiastic thumb up for the first hour of Scott Pilgrim. I'll be cashing in my next Beth Appreciation Day soon since I'm heading to a general medicine ward service later this week (eek!). Hasta.
